University of Madras offers PhD admission in two modes: Full-Time and Part-Time. Admission is generally processed in January and July sessions through the official online PhD portal.

Part-Time PhD – Teaching Candidates

  • Regular permanent teacher in a University Department / affiliated college / eligible State or Central University within University of Madras jurisdiction.
  • Normally requires 2 years continuous service without break for the regular teacher category.
  • PG Assistant / BT Assistant / Secondary Grade Teacher / Polytechnic teacher category generally requires 4 years continuous service after obtaining PG degree.
  • Full-time guest lecturers may also be eligible with 4 years continuous teaching experience in the same eligible institution category.

Part-Time PhD – Industry / Non-Teaching Candidates

  • Non-teaching candidates working for 4 years after the qualifying degree as regular employees in a registered firm / institution may apply.
  • The organization should be properly recognized / registered as required by University rules.
  • For industrial chemistry professionals, the proposed research topic should ideally align with the candidate’s work area.
  • Employer support documents and NOC are important for part-time research processing and continuation.

Application Flow

  1. Check official notification / session opening in the PhD portal.
  2. Identify the discipline, department, and preferably a recognized supervisor.
  3. Submit the online application through the official University portal.
  4. Submit required hard copies to the concerned University Department / Affiliated College / Research Institution within the prescribed date.
  5. Complete entrance examination / selection process as applicable.
  6. Proceed with admission, temporary registration, and later continuation formalities.
