Practical method for identifying, preparing, filling, reinforcing and repainting wall cracks using acrylic, polymer-modified and elastomeric systems.
| Crack Type | Approx. Width | Recommended Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Hairline Crack | Less than 1 mm | Acrylic crack filler or elastomeric putty |
| Small Plaster Crack | 1–3 mm | V-groove opening followed by acrylic crack sealant |
| Medium Crack | 3–6 mm | Polymer-modified cement filler with fibre mesh tape |
| Structural Crack | More than 6 mm, deep or recurring | Civil / structural inspection before sealing |
Do not apply filler directly on a thin surface crack. Open the crack into a small V-groove or U-groove.
This gives better anchoring and prevents early failure of the filler.
Remove the following before filling:
Use a wire brush and dry cloth for proper cleaning.
For cement-based filler, slightly wet the crack before filling. For acrylic filler, the surface should be clean and dry or only mildly damp as per product instructions.
For normal wall cracks, use:
Press the filler deep into the crack using a spatula. Avoid only surface-level filling.
This improves crack-bridging strength.
| Material | Approx. Drying Time |
|---|---|
| Acrylic crack filler | 4–8 hours surface dry |
| Cement-polymer filler | Minimum 24 hours |
| Before painting | Preferably 24–48 hours |
After drying, sand lightly to make the surface level. Do not over-sand and expose the crack again.
| Surface | Recommended Primer |
|---|---|
| Exterior wall | Exterior acrylic wall primer |
| Interior wall | Interior cement primer or wall primer |
For exterior cracks, prefer flexible finishing systems such as:
These coatings can bridge minor movement better than ordinary emulsion paints.
| Raw Material | Approx. Percentage | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic emulsion | 18–25% | Binder and flexibility |
| Water | 10–15% | Dilution and workability |
| Calcium carbonate / dolomite | 45–55% | Filler and body |
| Silica powder | 8–12% | Strength and hardness |
| Propylene glycol / coalescent | 1–2% | Film formation and open time |
| Dispersant | 0.3–0.5% | Filler dispersion |
| Thickener | 0.5–1.0% | Non-sag consistency |
| Preservative | 0.1–0.2% | Protection from microbial growth |
| Defoamer | 0.1–0.3% | Foam control |
| pH adjuster | q.s. | pH correction |
| Pigment, if required | 1–3% | Colour adjustment |
